You have written the introduction, added the background, explained the problem, listed the objectives, and finally reached the end of Chapter 1. On the screen, everything looks complete. Then the supervisor returns the draft with comments such as “too broad,” “research gap is unclear,” “objectives do not align,” or simply, “rewrite this section.” For many students, this is frustrating because Chapter 1 can look finished while still lacking the logic that makes the whole study convincing.

Chapter 1 is more than an opening chapter. It is the map of your research. It tells the reader what problem you are investigating, why the problem deserves attention, what previous research has not fully explained, what your study intends to achieve, and how its major elements connect. When Chapter 1 is weak, the effects often appear later in the literature review, conceptual framework, questionnaire, methodology, results, and discussion.

Certain warning signs appear again and again across undergraduate projects, master’s dissertations, and doctoral theses. If you recognise several of the following five signs in your own draft, you may not need another round of sentence-level editing. You may need to rebuild the chapter from the research problem outward.

Quick takeaway: If a reader cannot clearly connect your problem, research gap, objectives, and research questions, Chapter 1 is not yet doing its job.

Your Background Explains the Topic but Never Reaches the Research Problem

A background section should introduce the research context, but it should not remain at the level of general information. One of the most common Chapter 1 problems is a background that reads like a textbook entry. It defines the topic, describes trends, explains why the subject is important, and includes several citations, yet it never narrows the discussion to the specific issue the study will investigate.

For example, imagine a thesis on employee adoption of artificial intelligence in small and medium-sized enterprises. A weak opening might say: “Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly important in modern organisations. Businesses use AI to improve productivity, automate routine tasks, and support decision-making.” These sentences are reasonable, but they could appear in almost any paper about AI. They do not tell the reader what is uncertain, problematic, or under-researched.

A stronger version would move toward a defined concern: “Although organisations are increasingly experimenting with AI-enabled tools, adoption is not always consistent across employees and departments. Differences in technical readiness, management support, perceived usefulness, and confidence in AI may affect whether employees actually integrate these tools into their work.” Now the reader can see the direction of the study.

Think of the background as a funnel. Begin with the wider context, then move toward the national, industry, or organisational setting, the specific problem, what current research tells us, what it does not fully explain, and why your study is needed. If the background is many pages long but the actual issue only becomes clear in the final few lines, it is probably too broad. Importance alone does not create a research problem; the reader needs to see a question that can actually be investigated.

A useful test is to give the background to someone unfamiliar with the project and ask: “What exact problem is this thesis trying to investigate?” If they can describe the broad topic but cannot state the problem in one or two sentences, your Chapter 1 needs more focus.

Your Problem Statement Sounds Like Another Background Section

The problem statement is where many promising theses lose direction. Students often assume that a paragraph becomes a problem statement simply because it contains words such as “challenge,” “issue,” or “lack.” In reality, the problem statement should identify a specific researchable problem, support its existence with credible evidence, connect it to the literature, and explain why leaving it unresolved matters.

Consider a study about online learning. A weak problem statement might read: “Online learning has become common in universities. Students use digital platforms to attend classes, submit assignments, and communicate with lecturers. However, online learning also creates several challenges.” This is still background information. The reader knows the topic, but not the exact problem the proposed research will investigate.

A stronger version would be more specific: “Despite the widespread availability of online learning platforms, levels of student engagement can vary considerably. Previous research has examined technology acceptance and perceived usefulness, but the combined influence of lecturer support, digital readiness, and platform usability on postgraduate engagement remains insufficiently understood in the selected higher-education context.” This version identifies an outcome, possible explanatory factors, and a gap.

An effective problem statement normally contains four layers: the practical problem, what the academic literature already knows, what remains unresolved, and why investigating that gap matters. For example, saying “employee turnover is high” is a practical concern, but it is not yet a complete research problem. You still need to explain what aspect of turnover is being studied and why existing explanations are not enough.

Be careful with statements such as “few studies have been conducted.” A shortage of papers can be relevant, but it is not automatically a meaningful gap. The reader still needs to know what understanding is missing and why that missing knowledge matters for theory, management, policy, practice, or future research. A strong problem statement should make the next step the proposed study feel necessary rather than optional.

Your Problem, Objectives, Questions, and Variables Do Not Align

One of the clearest signs that Chapter 1 needs a rewrite is misalignment. A thesis should operate like a connected chain: the research problem leads to the objectives, the objectives lead to the research questions, the questions guide the methodology, and the analysis answers those questions. When one link changes without the others changing, the study starts to look fragmented.

Suppose your problem statement discusses employee engagement and argues that training quality, supervisor support, and gamification may influence participation in organisational learning. Your objectives should logically examine those relationships. If an objective suddenly states, “To determine the effect of leadership style on employee retention,” the reader will immediately wonder where leadership style and retention came from.

Alignment is especially important in quantitative research. If your conceptual framework contains four independent variables and one dependent variable, those variables should normally appear consistently in the objectives, research questions, hypotheses, literature review, measurement instrument, and analysis plan. A variable that appears in Chapter 3 but was never established in Chapter 1 can make the thesis feel as though different sections belong to different projects.

Here is a simple example of alignment. Problem: employees are not consistently engaging with gamified training. Objective: “To examine the relationship between gamification and employee engagement.” Research question: “What is the relationship between gamification and employee engagement?” Hypothesis: “Gamification has a significant positive relationship with employee engagement.” The analysis then uses an appropriate statistical test to evaluate that relationship. Each element points in the same direction.

Misalignment often develops when students revise one part after receiving feedback but forget to update the rest. A supervisor may recommend removing a variable from the framework, but the student leaves it in an objective, hypothesis, questionnaire, or significance section. Before continuing, create an alignment check for every objective: identify its matching question, variable or concept, hypothesis if applicable, measurement items, and analysis method. If you cannot trace an objective through the study, the structure needs attention.

Your Research Gap Is Just “There Are Limited Studies”

The phrase “limited studies” appears in many student theses, but on its own it is not a strong research gap. A research gap is not simply the absence of a large number of publications. It is a clearly described limitation in existing knowledge that your study is designed to address.

For example, “There are limited studies on gamification in human resource management” is too vague. Which part of gamification? Which HRM outcome? Which population or setting? What have previous studies already established? What remains uncertain? Without those details, the gap can sound like a convenient justification rather than an evidence-based research opportunity.

A stronger gap might say: “Although gamification has been widely examined in educational environments, fewer studies have tested its simultaneous relationship with training effectiveness, employee engagement, and job performance in organisational HRM settings.” This identifies a contextual and empirical gap. The reader can see how the proposed study differs from much of the existing work.

Research gaps can take different forms. A contextual gap exists when a topic has been studied in one setting but not sufficiently examined in another relevant setting. A population gap appears when important groups have been overlooked. A methodological gap exists when earlier studies rely heavily on one design and another approach could provide different evidence. A theoretical gap concerns a relationship or mechanism that has not been fully explained. An empirical gap appears when findings are mixed or inconclusive.

For instance, if some studies report that remote work improves job satisfaction while others report isolation and weaker team attachment, your gap does not have to be “nobody studied remote work.” The stronger gap may be that the relationship remains inconsistent and could depend on factors such as supervisor support or job autonomy. Likewise, a geographic gap should explain why the selected country or industry context could meaningfully affect the phenomenon rather than simply stating that “few local studies exist.”

Ask yourself: if you removed the sentence “there are limited studies,” would the reader still understand exactly what is missing from current knowledge? If the answer is no, your research gap needs more development.

Changes in Later Chapters Keep Forcing You Back to Chapter 1

Chapter 1 is not frozen once it is written. Research develops. You read more literature, refine the framework, improve the questionnaire, receive supervisor feedback, and sometimes discover that the original scope was too ambitious. Revising Chapter 1 during this process is normal. The warning sign is when every change in a later chapter exposes a new contradiction in the opening chapter.

Imagine that your original objective says, “To investigate factors influencing AI adoption among employees.” Later, after developing the framework, you decide to test four specific predictors: technical readiness, organisational support, perceived benefits, and change management. Your analysis is built around those variables, but Chapter 1 still uses the broad phrase “factors influencing AI adoption.” The objective no longer represents the study precisely.

Another example occurs when a study initially proposes a mediator or moderator but the final analysis does not test that role. If Chapter 1 continues to describe mediation while Chapter 3 presents only direct relationships and Chapter 4 reports only direct effects, the thesis becomes internally inconsistent. The problem may not be the statistics; it may be the failure to update the research story.

After major conceptual or methodological decisions, review the final title, problem statement, objectives, research questions, hypotheses, framework, scope, definitions, and significance section together. They should all describe the same study. There is also a difference between refinement and redirection. Making a broad objective more specific is refinement. Replacing the dependent variable halfway through the project can change the entire direction and may require substantial redevelopment.

Frequent changes become particularly risky once data collection begins. If the objectives change after a questionnaire has been distributed, you may discover that you did not collect the information needed to answer the new questions. If later chapters keep forcing you back to repair Chapter 1, stop patching individual sentences and return to the core research logic.

A Quick Chapter 1 Self-Check Before You Submit

Before sending the next draft to your supervisor, read Chapter 1 from beginning to end without editing individual sentences. Instead, check the argument. Can you explain the study in a few lines? What is the problem? What evidence shows that it matters? What exactly is missing from existing knowledge? What will your study examine? Who or what is included in the scope? How do the objectives answer the problem?

Try a simple highlight test. Highlight sentences that directly explain the research problem in one colour, sentences that establish the research gap in another, and sentences that justify the study in a third. If most of the chapter remains unhighlighted because it consists mainly of definitions and general topic descriptions, the introduction may be carrying too much background and too little research logic.

Next, compare your title, objectives, and research questions side by side. The same central concepts should appear consistently. If the title promises “employee engagement and performance” but the objectives only measure satisfaction, something is missing. If the questions contain five relationships but the framework displays only three, something is missing. Finally, make sure every objective can eventually be answered by the data you actually plan to collect.

Rewrite the Logic, Not Just the Sentences

When supervisors say Chapter 1 needs a rewrite, students sometimes respond by replacing words, changing sentence order, or adding more citations. These edits can improve presentation, but they do not repair a structural problem. If the research gap is unclear, rewriting the same idea in more academic language will not solve it. If the objectives do not match the problem, making them sound more formal will not create alignment.

A useful rewrite begins with the logic of the study. First, state the research problem as clearly as possible. Second, identify what the literature does and does not explain. Third, decide exactly what the study will examine. Fourth, build objectives and questions that respond directly to that gap. Only then should you polish the wording, strengthen transitions, check referencing, and improve presentation.

A clear Chapter 1 gives you a stronger foundation for choosing literature in Chapter 2, defending the conceptual framework, designing the methodology, selecting the analysis, and organising the discussion. A good thesis is not judged by how complicated it sounds; it is judged by how clearly the problem is justified and how logically the study answers it.
